The film centers on Ian Charleson, the actor who in 1989 took over the role of Hamlet from Daniel Day-Lewis in Richard Eyre's National Theatre production, after Day-Lewis left the Olivier Theatre stage mid-performance. Charleson starred in Chariots of Fire and appeared in Guys & Dolls at the National Theatre, directed by Eyre, in an ensemble that included Bob Hoskins, Julia McKenzie and Julie Covington.
After Charleson's death, Ian McKellen said that Charleson and his family had wanted to stop what he described as the pussyfooting around HIV/AIDS.
