Godzilla Minus Zero Sets Japanese Opening-Day Record
The kaiju sequel earned 910 million yen from 590,000 admissions on November 3, the biggest opening day for any live-action film in Japan.
Godzilla Minus Zero opened in 384 theaters across Japan on November 3 and earned 910 million yen (5.75 million USD) from 590,000 admissions on its first day, according to box office data reported by Crunchyroll. Kogyo Tsushinsha, the box office data source cited in the report, said the figure is the highest opening day gross in Japanese history for any live-action film, whether domestic or foreign.
The opening day was over 201% of the first-day performance of Godzilla Minus One, the previous film in the series. Takashi Yamazaki wrote and directed both films, and Godzilla Minus Zero is a direct sequel set two years after the events of Godzilla Minus One, in 1949, continuing the story of the Shikishima family.
The official Godzilla Minus Zero X account said the film has a chance to become the first entry in the Godzilla series to reach 10 billion yen at the box office. The highest-grossing Japanese Godzilla film to date remains Shin Godzilla, released in Japan on July 29, 2016, which earned 8.25 billion yen (52.2 million USD) over its domestic run.
Worldwide rollout begins the same week
GKIDS handles distribution in the United States and North America, where the film opens on November 6 after IMAX Early Access screenings on November 3. The release arrives almost simultaneously around the world that same week, including Latin America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand.
The overall record for a first day in Japan belongs to the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle anime film, which opened on July 18, 2025 and grossed 1.64 billion yen (7.97 million USD) on its first day.
