Godzilla Minus Zero Premieres at NYFF, First R-Rated Film in Franchise
Takashi Yamazaki's Godzilla Minus Zero debuted at the New York Film Festival, becoming the first R-rated entry in the franchise's 72-year history.
Godzilla Minus Zero had its world premiere at the New York Film Festival on Wednesday night at Alice Tully Hall, where the film drew multiple mid-screening applauses from the audience.
The sequel to Godzilla Minus One marks a franchise first: it is rated R for violent content and bloody images, the first entry in the 72-year-old Godzilla series to receive that rating.
Director Takashi Yamazaki returned to helm the film and said securing the R rating was essential to his vision. Censoring certain scenes, he explained, was not an option.
New York Film Festival director Dennis Lim introduced the screening. Yamazaki also asked the audience not to spoil the film's surprises on social media, noting he never intended to make a sequel until Godzilla Minus One was celebrated worldwide.
The film is scheduled for release later this year. Variety reported on the premiere.
