Gu You Says Fourth Landscape Painting Film in Development

The director tells Variety the next entry in his Chinese landscape painting series is in research and development and may lean toward genre.

Director Gu You says a fourth film in his Chinese landscape painting series is in research and development, and that it may lean toward genre. He disclosed the plan in an interview with Variety.

Gu had envisioned three films when he made the first entry in the series, which began with Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains in 2019. That film played Cannes Critics' Week and became the first Chinese-language film to close the section. He was credited as Gu Xiaogang on that title.

The second entry, Dwelling by the West Lake, competed at the Tokyo International Film Festival in 2023 and opened the Beijing International Film Festival the following year. Gu also received the Kurosawa Akira Award, becoming its youngest recipient.

A festival premiere and a China-France coproduction

Separately, Gu's The First Taste of Loneliness is world premiering in competition at the Busan International Film Festival. The film stars Zhou Xun, Xi Meijuan and Wang Shengdi.

The First Taste of Loneliness follows three generations of women facing loneliness for the first time after the death of a much-loved father. It is a China-France coproduction produced by Hangzhou Shanshui Films with France's Tandem Films, which will release the film in France. Losange Films handles international sales.
