Guadagnino's 'Artificial' Premieres at New York Film Festival
Luca Guadagnino's OpenAI drama 'Artificial' debuted Monday at NYFF, with Andrew Garfield playing Sam Altman and Neon planning awards push.
Luca Guadagnino's film Artificial premiered at the New York Film Festival on Monday night, drawing the first reactions from the film press, according to Variety. Early responses described the film as a provocative and visceral corporate drama, with Variety's Clayton Davis calling it Guadagnino's best film in a decade.
Andrew Garfield plays Sam Altman in the film, while Yura Borisov plays a character based on a former OpenAI chief scientist. The cast also includes Mark Rylance.
Neon's awards campaign for Artificial will place Garfield and Rylance in supporting actor categories and Borisov in lead actor, according to Variety.
The film is set during the tumultuous period when Altman, OpenAI's CEO, was fired and then rehired by the AI company in 2023.
In June, Neon closed a deal to complete the $40 million film after Amazon MGM Studios dropped the project months earlier, following a major partnership with OpenAI that included a $50 billion investment. Guadagnino reunited with Garfield on Artificial; the two last worked together on 2025's After the Hunt.
Artificial is scheduled for release on December 25, 2025.
