IDW Dark, Blumhouse Partner to Continue Horror Franchises as Comics
The Purge comic launches the partnership, with Dan Watters writing and Juan Jose Ryp on art. M3GAN and Happy Death Day comics will follow.
IDW Dark and Blumhouse have formed a partnership to continue The Purge, M3GAN and Happy Death Day as comic book series, the companies announced.
The initiative will begin next year with a The Purge series written by Dan Watters with art by Juan Jose Ryp. That comic is expected to be released sometime in 2027, and no plot details have been released for it or for the Happy Death Day comic.
IDW Dark lead editor Heather Antos has met with the filmmakers behind the respective franchises. Antos confirmed that the Happy Death Day comic continuation does not replace a possible Happy Death Day 3 film.
More titles are to be announced in the future as part of the partnership.
Existing Franchise History
Blumhouse has delivered franchises including Paranormal Activity, Insidious, Five Nights at Freddy's and The Black Phone. To date there have been five The Purge movies and two seasons of The Purge TV series, with the last live-action release being 2021's The Forever Purge.
M3GAN debuted in 2023 to strong financial and critical reception. The sequel M3GAN 2.0 and spin-off SOULM8TE had lackluster receptions. Filmmaker Christopher Landon and star Jessica Rothe still hope to make Happy Death Day 3.
