IDW to Release Star Trek Collection With Ellison's Original City on the Edge of Forever
IDW Publishing's pocket-sized Star Trek: The Edges of the Final Frontier: IDW Classic Collection arrives in eight days, featuring a comic adaptation of Harlan Ellison's original teleplay.
IDW Publishing is set to release Star Trek: The Edges of the Final Frontier: IDW Classic Collection in eight days, according to Collider. The pocket-sized comics collection is set in the era of Star Trek: The Original Series.
Among its contents is a comic book adaptation of "The City on the Edge of Forever," written by Harlan Ellison alongside Scott and David Tipton and artist JK Woodward.
The adaptation presents Ellison's intended version of the story. In it, a rebellious crew member named Beckwith travels through time instead of McCoy, and pirates raid the Enterprise once history changes.
Background
"The City on the Edge of Forever" is often regarded as one of the best episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series. In the aired version, Doctor McCoy accidentally overdoses on a drug and travels through time via the Guardian of Forever; Kirk and Spock follow him to the Great Depression, where McCoy saves Edith Keeler, meaning Starfleet never came to be. Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry tapped Ellison to write a story for the show, and the two later entered into a years-long feud. Ellison sued Paramount and the Writers' Guild of America over his original script in 2009, eventually settling out of court, and lived to see IDW adapt his original teleplay into comic form.
