James Gunn: DCU Is a Self-Contained Alternate Universe
The DC Studios co-head said on Threads that DCU stories should stand on their own, comparing the approach to Star Wars.
James Gunn said the DCU operates as an alternate universe where audiences can enter its stories at any location or time, in a post on Threads responding to a fan discussion about what the franchise is building toward. The DC Studios co-head made the comments in a thread reported by movieweb.com.
Gunn said he dislikes the idea that individual stories are not meaningful unless they lead to something else. He compared the DCU's approach to how Star Wars has worked for 50 years across films, shows, games and books.
He said the Superman Saga begins with Superman and continues into Man of Tomorrow, with characters introduced in other stories. Man of Tomorrow is set for release on July 9, 2027 and is set to feature John Stewart, Rick Flag Sr. and Jaime Reyes.
Gunn also said he wants audiences to see Clayface as a great horror movie in itself rather than as setup for future appearances. He and DC Studios co-head Peter Safran have not announced plans for a large Avengers-style crossover film.
Background
In 2025, Superman was well received and Supergirl was a box office flop, while Clayface recently opened to a strong start. DCU television shows so far include Creature Commandos, Peacemaker and Lanterns. In 2017, Justice League was widely considered a disappointment, and Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters on December 18, 2026.
