Jason Momoa Calls Hayt Role in Dune: Part Three His Weirdest Character

The actor told The New York Times he had to work out how to play a character who does not know who Duncan Idaho was.

Jason Momoa said his role as Hayt in Dune: Part Three is probably the weirdest character he has ever had to navigate, according to an interview with The New York Times.

Momoa said he was originally hired to play Duncan Idaho for a certain reason and had to figure out how to play a character who does not know who the original person was. In the film he returns as Hayt, a ghola made from Duncan Idaho's genetic material.

The actor said he did not have director Denis Villeneuve on this film the way he did on the first one, and that he came into the already-running production without calling to ask questions. He described the performance as probably his most subtle, adding that he is not the most subtle actor or human.

Dune: Part Three is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026.

Momoa played Duncan Idaho, a swordmaster and mentor to Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides, in the first Dune film, where the character sacrificed himself. In the Dune story, Duncan's body was recovered and regrown by the Bene Tleilax as a ghola named Hayt, who has Duncan's muscle memory and some genetic traits but not his full memory.
