Shabana Azmi and Marco Müller are among the guests at the inaugural three-day event, which Kathmandu Metropolitan City launched and runs Oct. 30–Nov. 1.
The first Kathmandu Film Festival opens on October 30 in Nepal, running three days through November 1 with a lineup of 40 films from 14 countries. Kathmandu Metropolitan City launched the festival, according to Variety.
Indian actor Shabana Azmi and film critic and historian Marco Müller are among the guests at the inaugural edition.
The program is divided into several strands, including an International Panorama, Nepal Panorama Shorts, a selection of restored Nepali features and open-air screenings. International selections include Marine Atlan's Cannes premiere "La Gradiva" and Shahrbanoo Sadat's "No Good Men," which debuted in Berlin this year.
Restored classics and a Japan focus
A retrospective of restored 1970s and 1980s titles includes "Kumari," credited as Nepal's first color feature. A separate shorts program focuses on Yamagata, Japan, tied to the 70th anniversary of Nepal–Japan diplomatic relations.
Screenings will be held at venues including Basantapur, City Hall, the Nepal Tourism Board, Jai Nepal Cinema and Taragaon. Entry is free, though some events require advance booking, and prizes will be awarded in the youth video challenge and Nepal panorama sections.
Kathmandu holds a UNESCO Creative City of Film designation, the same as Yamagata, Japan.
