The 140-minute director's cut of The Lawnmower Man has become available to stream on Prime Video. The film stars Pierce Brosnan and Jeff Fahey and was directed by Brett Leonard. The 1987 short adaptation of Stephen King's The Lawnmower Man is also streaming on YouTube, according to Collider.
Leonard had intended the film as a futuristic sci-fi thriller about the dangers of virtual reality. Its effects studio later became Rockstar Games.
The rights to King's short story bounced between several producers, including Dino De Laurentiis, in 1978 and later. In 1990, the story was grafted onto Brett Leonard and Gimel Everett's original CyberGod script.
The Lawnmower Man was released in 1992 and grossed around $30 million. King sued twice over the film's use of his name — once at release and again when it came out on home video — and the matter was settled for $2.5 million.
