Lee Child Says He Vetoed Third Tom Cruise Jack Reacher Film

The author, whose Jack Reacher novels now fuel Prime Video's Reacher, called the streaming series a 'fabulous luxury.'

Author Lee Child said in an interview that he used a veto to stop a third Jack Reacher film starring Tom Cruise, and described the Prime Video series as a "fabulous luxury." Deadline reported the comments.

The veto closed off a film franchise that had run for two movies with Cruise as the lead. Child's remarks place the decision in his hands rather than the studio's.

The character has since moved to television. Prime Video's Reacher, with Alan Ritchson in the title role, is preparing its fifth and sixth seasons.

Why the author prefers the series

Child framed the streaming version as the format that suits the books, calling it a "fabulous luxury." The series has become a long-running property for Amazon, which ordered two more seasons ahead of the usual renewal schedule.

The Jack Reacher film deal was done in 2005, and the first Cruise film, directed by Christopher McQuarrie, arrived in December 2012. The second, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, directed by Edward Zwick, was released in 2016, with the two films finishing in 2017. Reacher's first season premiered on Prime Video in 2022. Prime Video gave an early renewal for Season 5 in May, before Season 4 premiered in August; Season 4 drew 66 million viewers globally in its first 28 days, after which Amazon granted an early Season 6 renewal.
