Marvel Comics has released Midnight: Fantastic Four #1, a horror-focused continuity in which Reed Richards' gate experiment leaves Victor von Doom badly burned.
Marvel Comics has released Midnight: Fantastic Four #1, a new series by writer Benjamin Percy and artists Kev Walker, Frank D'Armata and Joe Sabino. The issue debuts a new design for Doctor Doom and opens a horror-focused continuity, according to screenrant.com.
In this version of the story, Reed Richards activates a gate while Victor von Doom is touching it. The resulting accident leaves Victor with severe burns over his entire body and in a corpse-like state.
The issue closes by revealing that Victor survived, or was resurrected, and is now recovering in the care of his mother.
A different origin for Doom
The comic departs from established Marvel lore, in which Doom suffers only minor facial injuries in a college experiment and then burns his face by placing the metal mask on before it has cooled.
Classic Marvel continuity also establishes Doom's mother as a powerful sorcerer trapped in Hell by Mephisto, with Doom attempting to rescue her once a year until he finally succeeds with help from Doctor Strange.
