Marvel Announces Zombies Special The Last Guardian for 2029
The Disney+ animated special is one of three Halloween titles Marvel Studios plans for the next three years, with The Winter Soldier and Fist of Khonshu arriving first.
Marvel Studios announced Marvel Zombies: The Last Guardian at New York Comic Con 2026, an animated special set for Disney+ in 2029. The reveal was reported by screenrant.com.
The special is one of three upcoming Disney+ animated Halloween specials Marvel has planned over the next three years. The Last Guardian is scheduled to arrive after Marvel Zombies: The Winter Soldier and Marvel Zombies: Fist of Khonshu.
Marvel has not confirmed which character the "Last Guardian" refers to. The subtitle uses the same font as the MCU's Guardians of the Galaxy films, a detail that has fueled speculation about a link to that franchise, though nothing has been confirmed. Names floated by observers include Nebula, Rocket and Groot.
The Guardians of the Galaxy films were directed by James Gunn, who is now co-head of DC Studios. In 2018 Disney fired Gunn from the franchise, then rehired him the following year to work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which ended with Nebula establishing a new community on Knowhere. The animated series I Am Groot continued without Gunn's direct creative involvement in its second season.
