Netflix Adds Police Squad!, the Six-Episode Spoof That Launched The Naked Gun
The Leslie Nielsen cop-show parody, created by the Airplane! team, was cancelled by ABC after six episodes.
Netflix has added Police Squad! to its streaming catalog, giving subscribers access to the short-lived cop-show spoof that starred Leslie Nielsen as Detective Frank Drebin. Screencrush reported the addition.
The series was created by David Zucker, Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams in the wake of Airplane!, the 1980 comedy hit the trio made together. Nielsen played Drebin as a deadpan investigator in a show built on visual gags and rapid-fire jokes.
ABC cancelled Police Squad! after six episodes, citing bad ratings. Those six episodes are the complete run of the series.
From small screen to big screen
The Zuckers later adapted the concept into the film The Naked Gun, which spawned two sequels and a recent reboot starring Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr.
Netflix has also recently added SCTV: The Greatest Show You've Never Heard Of, a documentary about the sketch series that featured performers including John Candy, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara and Martin Short.
