Netflix's $500m Xbox licensing offer fell apart over $800m counter

The seven-year exclusive film and TV deal collapsed after Netflix executives judged Xbox's $800m asking price too high, according to Eurogamer.

Netflix offered Xbox $500m for a seven-year exclusive licence to adapt its games into films and TV shows, according to Eurogamer. The deal reportedly collapsed after Xbox countered at $800m and Netflix executives decided the price was too high.

The report originates with Puck News reporter Matt Belloni. Neither side has confirmed the figures.

Despite the failed negotiation, the two companies remain in business together. Netflix and Xbox are continuing to collaborate on animated Minecraft and Diablo series and a live-action Gears of War film.

Xbox said it has received record-breaking interest in its intellectual property and described Netflix as a valued partner.

A crowded adaptation slate

Other studios are also drawing on game franchises. Amazon is developing a live-action Wolfenstein series and will soon debut the third season of its Fallout show, while Paramount is developing a Call of Duty film.

At BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard Entertainment president Johanna Faries suggested Overwatch and Warcraft could receive adaptations. Recent game adaptations cited as successes include this year's Resident Evil reboot, Illumination's Super Mario Bros films, HBO's The Last of Us, Amazon's Fallout and three live-action Sonic films, while this year's Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat 2 releases were received more tepidly.
