Newlyweds Showrunner Gail Lerner Fired Weeks Before NBC Premiere

Gail Lerner says she was dismissed from the NBC comedy over creative differences less than two weeks before its October 23, 2026 debut.

Gail Lerner, co-creator and showrunner of NBC's Newlyweds, announced on Instagram that she was fired from the series over creative differences, according to screenrant.com. Her dismissal came less than two weeks before the show's premiere on October 23, 2026.

The first six episodes of Newlyweds were produced under Lerner's leadership, and it is those episodes that will air when the comedy debuts on NBC.

Lerner was originally announced as co-creator of Newlyweds alongside Jamie Lee Curtis, who serves as an executive producer and appears in a supporting role as Claudia. During NBC's fall preview, Lerner said Curtis brought her the premise of the show during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The cast also includes Tea Leoni as Jeanie, Tim Daly as Tony, Ignacio Diaz-Silverio, Emma Meisel and Al Madrigal. Pamela Fryman, who directed 196 of How I Met Your Mother's 208 episodes, directed the pilot.

Lerner's previous television credits include co-executive producer roles on Will & Grace, Ugly Betty, Happy Endings and Black-ish.
