Orcas Island Film Festival to Honor Beth de Araújo, Pamela Koffler

The Orcas Island Film Festival announced it will present its Jean-Marc Vallée Vanguard Award to director Beth de Araújo for her film Josephine. The festival also named Pamela Koffler, co-founder of Killer Films, as its Marquee Industry Guest.

Koffler will take part in a conversation about her work on Saturday, October 17, moderated by Gregory Ellwood of The Playlist. The festival runs October 14-18.

The lineup includes Josephine, Fjord, La Bola Negra, Bitter Christmas, The Debut, Coward, All of a Sudden, Rose, Elsinore and The Only Living Pickpocket in New York. The nonfiction slate features Once Upon a Time in Harlem, Union Town, Boatbuilders, Rehearsals for a Revolution and Nuisance Bear.

Prizes already on the shelf

Several titles arrive with major awards earned earlier on the festival circuit. Josephine, starring Gemma Chan and Channing Tatum, won the Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic and the Audience Award for U.S. Dramatic at the Sundance Film Festival. Fjord, directed by Cristian Mungiu, won the Palme d'Or. La Bola Negra took Best Director at Cannes for Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, plus Toronto's People's Choice Award for Best Film.

Coward, directed by Lukas Dhont, won acting prizes at Cannes for Emmanuel Macchia and Valentin Campagne. All of a Sudden, directed by Ryūsuke Hamaguchi, earned Cannes Best Actress prizes for Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto. Rose, directed by Markus Schleinzer, won Sandra Hüller the Berlin Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance.

In November, Koffler and Christine Vachon will receive the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award from the Motion Picture Academy's Governors Awards. Last year's OIFF attracted attendees from 25 U.S. states and nine countries, according to deadline.com.
