Warner Bros. Pulls Practical Magic 2 From 2,900 Theaters Before PVOD Debut
Practical Magic 2 exits roughly 2,900 theaters ahead of its premium video-on-demand release this week, after a worldwide gross that barely crossed $100 million.
Warner Bros. has removed Practical Magic 2 from around 2,900 theaters as the sequel heads to the PVOD market this week, according to collider.com. The move comes after the film added roughly $1.3 million to its domestic total over the past weekend and fell out of the top 10.
Practical Magic 2 has barely passed the $100 million mark worldwide. The sequel stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, who reprise their lead roles, with Maisie Williams and Joey King joining the cast. Susanne Bier directed.
The theatrical pullback follows a wide domestic rollout in more than 4,000 theaters about a month before the article. That release pattern put it on a path similar to its predecessor, the 1990s cult classic Practical Magic.
A box office run in line with the original
Both Practical Magic 2 and the original Practical Magic carried production budgets of around $75 million, and the sequel has performed almost identically to the 1990 film. For Bullock, the release marks a return to a lead role in a big-screen movie after The Lost City, which grossed around $190 million worldwide in 2022. Kidman, meanwhile, has recently appeared in several successful streaming projects, including the Netflix series The Perfect Couple, which Bier also directed.
