A project years in the making
In the 1990s, Bird originally developed Ray Gunn at Turner Entertainment, but the project was shelved after the company merged with Time Warner. After Warner Bros. declined Ray Gunn, Bird made The Iron Giant.
Bird says he used his own money to develop Ray Gunn by the time he began working on The Incredibles. Warner Bros. later approached Bird about working together again, and he was on the road to making Ray Gunn with Warner Bros. before the studio was bought by AT&T.
