Rosemarie DeWitt Joins Star Trek: Starfleet Academy as Betazed's First Lady
DeWitt plays Laytha Sadal, wife of President Emerin Sadal and mother of cadets Tarima and Ocam, in the show's second and final season.
Rosemarie DeWitt has joined the cast of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, playing Laytha Sadal, the First Lady of Betazed, according to screenrant.com. The character will be introduced in the series' second season.
Laytha is the wife of Betazed's President Emerin Sadal, played by Anthony Natale, and the mother of two cadets: Tarima, played by Zoe Steiner, and Ocam, played by Romeo Carere. The casting sets up a new Betazoid mother-daughter storyline for the series.
The announcement arrives after the first season placed Tarima at the center of one of its most dramatic turns. In episode 6, "Come, Let's Away," Tarima released her powers to save her friends and fell into a coma.
Betazed's place in the series has been building across the season. Episode 2, "Beta Test," revealed that the planet broke away from the Federation after The Burn and erected a psychic wall around its planetary system. In the post-Burn era, Betazed negotiated its return to the Federation, and the Federation capital was moved to Betazed. In the 24th century, Betazed had been conquered by the Dominion off-screen during Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's Dominion War.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is executive produced by Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau. Its second and final season premieres in March 2027 on Paramount+.
