Scooby-Doo Marks 60 Straight Days on HBO Max Top Ten
The 2002 live-action film sits at number nine on the US movies chart, ahead of The Shining, according to Screen Rant.
The 2002 live-action Scooby-Doo film has held a place on HBO Max's US top ten movies chart for 60 consecutive days, according to Screen Rant. It currently ranks ninth on the chart.
The film sits above the 1980 movie The Shining in that ranking. The 2026 releases Backrooms and Evil Dead Burn hold the second and third spots, respectively.
Scooby-Doo was released on June 14, 2002, with a screenplay by James Gunn and direction by Raja Gosnell. The cast was led by Matthew Lillard, Linda Cardellini, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr., Rowan Atkinson and Isla Fisher.
After its 2002 theatrical run, the film went on to gross around $275 million at the box office, and it later built a cult following despite negative reviews from critics at the time.
Gunn's Career and the Franchise Today
Gunn has spent much of the past decade building superhero cinematic universes, beginning with Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, and now works on DC Universe projects as a filmmaker and co-CEO of DC Studios, including 2025's Superman film starring David Corenswet, the animated series Creature Commandos and Peacemaker season 2. Before that, he was best known for horror work such as 2004's Dawn of the Dead and 2006's Slither. He has said the 2002 Scooby-Doo film was the one that launched his career.
A third installment was once planned, with Warner Bros. Pictures enlisting Gunn to write and direct Scooby-Doo 3 before the 2004 sequel underperformed and the project was scrapped; Gunn and the original cast have no plans to return. The franchise continues instead with Netflix's live-action series Scooby-Doo: Origins, set to debut in 2027 with Mckenna Grace as Daphne, Tanner Hagen as Shaggy, Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma and Maxwell Jenkins as Fred Jones.
