Nova Squadron Returns in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 2

Nova Squadron will appear in its 32nd century incarnation in season 2 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau announced at New York Comic Con's Star Trek Universe panel, as reported by Screen Rant.

The announcement brings the elite cadet unit into the series for the first time. Season 1 did not feature Nova Squadron and instead introduced a rivalry between Starfleet Academy and the War College.

Season 2 moves the cadets away from their San Francisco campus into deep space. In the season 2 premiere, Ruaridh Aldington plays a mysterious new cadet named Keats, and Caleb Mir, played by Sandro Rosta, will be flying against the elite cadets.

A legacy of rivalries and cover-ups

Nova Squadron was introduced in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 5's "The First Duty," in which a cover-up followed the death of a classmate in a stunt. In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, elite cadets called Red Squad joined an attempted military coup and later waged guerrilla war against the Dominion, leading to most of the group's deaths. Nova Squadron returned in Star Trek: Prodigy season 2, about 15 years after "The First Duty," led by Nicholas Locarno and allied with the USS Protostar's crew.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2 is set to release on Paramount+ on March 1, 2027.
