The Odyssey Returns to IMAX This Friday After Digger Stumbles

The Odyssey is back on IMAX screens, including 70mm, after Digger's poor opening freed the premium format last weekend.

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is returning to IMAX theaters this Friday, regaining the 70mm screens it lost last weekend to Digger, the film's poor box office opening having freed up the premium format.

The re-release will play on digital IMAX screens as well as 70mm, according to joblo.com. IMAX 70mm screenings of The Odyssey had been selling out for more than two months after the film opened.

Digger, which stars Tom Cruise, opened disastrously at the box office last weekend and took over the IMAX 70mm slots. The film was shot in 65mm VistaVision and was intended as an IMAX event.

What's next on IMAX

The next IMAX 70mm release is Dune: Part Three, which opens on December 18th. Street Fighter is scheduled for IMAX on October 16th, Godzilla Minus Zero on November 6th, and The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping on November 20th.

IMAX had been playing The Odyssey in 70mm all summer long. In October 2025, Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another had a similar IMAX event release.
