Kubrick's The Shining Returns to HBO Max

Stanley Kubrick's 1980 adaptation of Stephen King's novel is streaming on HBO Max again, with Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall in the lead roles.

Stanley Kubrick's The Shining is available to stream on HBO Max again, according to Polygon. The 1980 film is once more part of the platform's catalogue.

The film is based on Stephen King's 1977 novel of the same name. Kubrick's adaptation arrived three years after the book, in 1980.

Jack Nicholson plays Jack Torrance and Shelley Duvall plays Wendy Torrance in the film, which is set largely in the Overlook Hotel.

King's long-running disagreement with the film

King has said he dislikes Kubrick's adaptation of his novel. In 2013, he told the BBC that Duvall's Wendy was one of the most misogynistic characters ever put on film, and in 1983 he told Playboy that Nicholson was all wrong for the part of Jack Torrance.

Following the film's release, Duvall was nominated for worst actress at the Razzies.
