Tom Holland is set to trade superhero spandex for tap shoes. The actor will play Fred Astaire in an untitled biopic for Sony, the studio announced. Margaret Qualley will play Astaire's sister and early stage partner, Adele Astaire, while Sabrina Carpenter will take on the role of Ginger Rogers, Astaire's most famous screen partner.
Paul King is directing the film, with Amy Pascal producing. The project was first announced five years ago and is now moving forward with its lead cast in place.
Holland said he has already begun rehearsing for the role. He also said he intends to perform all of the dancing himself, without doubles. That commitment is not entirely new territory for Holland, who played the title role in Billy Elliot the Musical on the West End from 2008 to 2010.
Fred Astaire starred in more than 30 film musicals over a career that spanned seven decades. He is best known for his pairings with Rogers, including Swing Time, The Gay Divorcee and Top Hat.
