Whalefall, from director Brian Duffield, opens Friday

Brian Duffield directed and co-wrote the adaptation of Daniel Kraus's novel about a diver swallowed by a sperm whale.

Whalefall, directed by Brian Duffield, opens in theaters on Friday, October 16, according to IndieWire. Duffield co-wrote the screenplay with Daniel Kraus, the author of the novel the film is based on.

Duffield said he researched whale anatomy for the film, working with production designer Ramsey Avery and the visual effects team.

The project traces back to a tweet Kraus posted a few years ago. In it, Kraus said his next book, Whalefall, would tell the story of a scuba diver swallowed by a sperm whale with only an hour of oxygen.

Duffield contacted Kraus after seeing the tweet and stayed in contact while Kraus finished the book.

A Brian Duffield episode of the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast is set to air later this fall.
