Amazon Pledges $1B to Data Center Communities, Ends NDAs
Amazon announced a Data Center Commitment, including over $1 billion for local communities and an end to nondisclosure agreements with government agencies.
Amazon published a blog post today in which AWS CEO Matt Garman urged the public to support AI data center projects. The company also introduced a "Data Center Commitment" outlining practices on job creation, preventing increases to local energy rates, and investing more than $1 billion in neighboring communities.
Amazon said it no longer uses nondisclosure agreements with government agencies. Garman noted that over 100 data center moratoriums are being considered across the US.
The announcement comes amid a broader industry shift away from secrecy. Amazon chief global affairs and legal officer David Zapolsky said in a Wall Street Journal-reported interview that the industry has a history of secrecy and that requiring secrecy "just didn't make sense" anymore.
Democratic lawmaker Jamie Raskin has probed tech companies about secret deals with local officials. Support for AI data centers has plummeted in polls amid growing backlash from US communities.
