American Express Unveils Framework to Verify AI Agent Payments
American Express introduced its Intent Intelligence Framework, which authenticates a shopper's purchase intent before an AI agent completes a transaction.
American Express has publicly unveiled the Intent Intelligence Framework, a system designed to stop AI agents from making unauthorized payments, according to TechCrunch.
The framework lets an AI agent capture and authenticate a user's purchase intent before a payment is completed. It begins with a "Create Intent API," which records the user's purchase instruction, including conditions such as the merchant name, a maximum budget and product preferences.
Users then verify and approve the intent the agent has collected through identity authentication. After approval, the system generates an Intent ID and an intent proof token containing the top-level conditions.
The agent uses that token to obtain secure digital payment credentials instead of a real card number. American Express said the system can block cases such as an agent attempting to pay for Adidas products when the user asked for white Nike sneakers in size 9.
The company said it aims to grow the framework into an industry standard for AI-based transactions.
