Android Authority Poll: 63% Sideload via Manual APK Downloads
An Android Authority poll of over 1,800 votes found that most respondents who sideload apps download individual APKs manually rather than using alternative stores.
Android Authority has published the results of a reader poll in which over 1,800 votes were cast on how respondents sideload apps. More than 63% said they manually download and install individual APK files.
According to the outlet, 20.7% of respondents said they sideload apps through an alternative app store. Another 16% said they do not sideload at all and use only the Google Play Store.
The poll was conducted among Android Authority readers, so its results reflect that audience and not the broader Android user base.
Background
In mid-August 2026, Google began rolling out sideloading restrictions on Android, introducing an advanced flow, multiple warnings and a 24-hour wait timer. Tools such as F-Droid, Obtainium, InstallWithOptions and Kvaesitso are among the alternatives associated with sideloading.
