Anthropic's Claude update blocks recreating existing games

Anthropic staff member Addy Osmani confirmed the new rule, saying IP infringement violates the company's usage policy.

An update to Anthropic's Claude AI software appears to block it from creating clones or copies of existing games, according to Eurogamer. The change was made around 27 October, the outlet reports.

A screenshot shared on X by user Chasm shows a new rule instructing Claude to build original games but not to recreate a specific existing game, even if it is renamed.

Anthropic technical staff member Addy Osmani confirmed the legitimacy of the rule change. Osmani said the rule exists because using Claude to infringe intellectual property is against Anthropic's usage policy.

Users on GitHub reported being blocked from creating digital modules for board games, as well as from recreating a commercially produced board game for personal use.

Eurogamer has contacted Anthropic for comment on the rule change.

AI-assisted copies of major games have also appeared, including a version of Mario Kart 8 playable in an internet browser, which was taken down within days, reportedly after a legal notice from Nintendo.
