Anthropic S-1 Leak Shows Cloud Capacity Squeeze From AWS, Google, Microsoft

A leaked filing reported by The Wall Street Journal says Anthropic could spend more than $750 billion on cloud contracts, some still under negotiation.

Anthropic is struggling to secure enough cloud capacity from AWS, Google and Microsoft, which increasingly view the Claude-maker as a competitor rather than a customer, according to an S-1 filing leaked to The Wall Street Journal. The filing adds detail to figures Reuters and the Financial Times reported in late September.

According to the leaked document, Anthropic believes it could spend more than $750 billion on cloud contracts, some of which are still under negotiation. The company is also leasing its own data centers and working with third-party data center operators.

The filing cautions that those third-party operators have a limited operating history, which could make them less reliable than the hyperscalers. It also warns that Anthropic could be held liable for damages from harmful AI behavior beyond its available insurance coverage.

Anthropic told prospective investors the previous week that third-quarter revenue alone reached $16.8 billion, up 45% from the prior quarter. The company is reportedly targeting a November IPO.

In the first half of the year, Anthropic reported an $80.7 billion net loss on $16.3 billion in revenue, with only two customers accounting for about a fifth of sales, according to the Journal's report.

Anthropic did not immediately respond to TechCrunch's request for comment.
