Apache OpenOffice 4.1.17 Fixes Critical Code-Execution Flaw

The update closes CVE-2026-59265, which allowed arbitrary code to run when a crafted document was opened, and adds atomic file saving.

The Apache Software Foundation released Apache OpenOffice 4.1.17 on October 14, 2026, a security and bug-fix update the project recommends for everyone running version 4.1.16 or earlier, according to forest.watch.impress.co.jp. The release closes the critical vulnerability CVE-2026-59265, which could allow arbitrary code execution when a user opens a crafted document.

The flaw was announced earlier in October 2026. The same issue was tracked in LibreOffice as CVE-2026-63277 and is fixed there in versions 26.2.5 and 26.8.0.

Beyond the security patch, 4.1.17 strengthens Python macro handling, so Python scripts can be created, edited, run and embedded directly inside documents. DXF import now renders more drawing primitives correctly when CAD data is brought in, and database support has been improved.

The suite now writes and replaces files atomically, which the project says reduces the risk of corruption during shutdown or an interrupted save. Compatibility with Microsoft Excel XML (SpreadsheetML) was improved, along with the reliability of importing and exporting ODF/XML documents.

Apache OpenOffice 4.1.17 is available for Windows, Mac and Linux as free, donation-supported software from openoffice.org. A Microsoft Store version for Windows 10 and 11 in some languages is expected to become available soon.

OpenOffice.org origins

Apache OpenOffice derives from OpenOffice.org, the office suite Sun Microsystems previously distributed free of charge.
