Apple's HomeView hub may gain security camera mode, code shows

Strings in HomeView 27.2 reference HomeKit Secure Video, motion detection and recording for the smart home hub, according to a Reddit find reported by The Verge.

A Reddit user has found code strings in Apple's HomeView 27.2 software that reference a security camera mode for the HomeView smart home hub, according to The Verge. Apple has not said the feature is coming.

The referenced mode includes motion detection, live streaming and recording options, alongside privacy functions. One setup page string says the HomeView can be used as a security camera with HomeKit Secure Video.

According to the strings, video feeds would only be visible to members of the home. An indicator light and a sound would signal when someone watches the camera feed or when recording starts, and home members would be notified whenever the Secure Video mode's settings are changed.

Detection, streaming and recording options would be customizable depending on whether users are home, away or asleep, the code indicates.

When the HomeView launched, some observers questioned why Apple did not let the device double as a security camera, The Verge noted. Apple has not commented on the strings.
