Apple Seeks Developer Input on Safari Layout for iPhone Duo Outer Display

Apple's Jen Simmons said in a WebKit blog post about Safari 27.1 that the company is exploring a more reliable approach than viewport-fit="cover".

Apple said on October 23, 2026, that it is exploring ways to let websites make fuller use of the iPhone Duo's outer display in Safari, and invited web developers to submit ideas. The company's position was detailed by Jen Simmons in a WebKit blog post about Safari 27.1, according to 9to5mac.com.

Simmons said websites currently cannot extend behind Safari's controls on the iPhone Duo's outer display. She added that Apple is investigating a "more foolproof and easier approach" than the viewport-fit="cover" meta tag, which could obscure content on sites that do not account for those areas.

The Safari 27.1 post also covers how websites adapt to the iPhone Duo's different screen sizes and folding positions. Apple did not say when or whether a change would ship.

The disclosure follows an earlier review of the iPhone Duo, published earlier this week by Chance Miller, which found that Safari's right-aligned controls take up much of the 5.4-inch outer display's limited space, leaving a narrow content area.
