Apple Tests Safari Code That Logs Google Chrome Promotions
Since iOS 27.2 beta 2, Safari has been testing code to detect when Google promotes Chrome or the Google app and how users respond, according to 9to5mac.com.
Apple has been testing code in Safari that detects when Google shows banners promoting Chrome or the Google app on its search pages, according to 9to5mac.com. The testing began with iOS 27.2 beta 2.
The Safari code is designed to log whether promotional banners were shown, whether the user appears signed in to a Google account, and whether the user interacted with the promotion.
Safari injects a .js script into certain Google home and search results pages to look for visible promotional banners and Google page elements encouraging users to open or install Chrome or the Google app. It also looks for links associated with either app, including their custom URL schemes and App Store IDs, and categorizes the interaction as accepted or dismissed.
As of iOS 27.2 beta 3 and Safari 27.2 beta release notes, Apple has not publicly documented the feature.
