Bain: AI Industry May Need $6 Trillion a Year by 2031

Bain & Company estimates AI infrastructure spending could reach $1.5 trillion annually, requiring about $6 trillion in yearly revenue to sustain it.

Bain & Company has published new research estimating that the AI industry may need roughly $6 trillion in annual revenue by 2031 to sustain infrastructure spending that could reach $1.5 trillion per year, according to techradar.com.

The report assumes infrastructure would consume about 25% of sales, a ratio Bain describes as a bold yet fair assumption based on how cloud computing providers previously spent about 25% of sales on infrastructure.

Bain projects that about $4.2 trillion of the required revenue would come from new products in search, advertising, autonomous systems and physical AI. Enterprise productivity is projected to add $1 trillion to $1.4 trillion, while consumer subscriptions and advertising are expected to contribute only $200 billion to $400 billion.

Bain's David Crawford said the industry needs a surge of ideas dwarfing what mobile technology and cloud computing unlocked earlier.

Data center costs scale up

Bain also said data center size and cost have been increasing at roughly double rates over periods of approximately 12 to 16 months globally. According to Epoch AI, Meta's Prometheus facility in Ohio had 600MW of capacity and an estimated $24 billion cost in 2025.

Epoch AI estimates that facility could reach 2GW and $80 billion by 2027, 5GW and $175 billion by 2029, and 9GW and $200 billion by 2030.
