BYD led global electric vehicle brand sales in August with 375,373 vehicles, ahead of Tesla's 141,996, according to CleanTechnica's roundup of global EV sales figures. The Tesla Model Y nonetheless remained the world's best-selling pure electric model for the month.
Year to date through August, BYD accounted for 20.3% of global plug-in vehicle sales. Geely ranked second at 9.9%, with Tesla third at 8.3%.
Battery electric vehicles grew 13% year-on-year in August, while plug-in hybrids declined 12%. The Geely Xingyuan, badged EX2 outside China, out-sold the Tesla Model 3 during the month.
Chinese automakers hold a large share of the world's top-20 best-selling EVs, a group that includes BYD, Geely, Leapmotor, MG, Fang Cheng Bao, Qiyuan, Li, Wuling and Xiaomi.
Model Y holds the model crown
In August, the Tesla Model Y nearly doubled the sales of its closest rival, the BYD Song/Seal U. The Tesla Model 3, long a fixture near the top of global EV sales charts, was outsold by the Xingyuan.
