Google Tests Biometric Lock for Chrome Password Autofill
Google is testing a Chrome Canary flag that requires biometric authentication before autofilling passwords on Android.
Google is testing a new Chrome Canary flag that requires biometric authentication before the browser autofills passwords on Android. The flag, called "Biometric reauth for password filling," appears in Chrome Canary version 157.0.8083.0.
According to Leopeva64, who reported the feature, enabling the flag and tapping a saved password triggers a biometric prompt. However, in testing on a Pixel 8, enabling the flag did not trigger biometric authentication. The source was on Chrome Canary version 157.0.8079.0 when they saw the prompt.
The feature is not entirely new. Google has been experimenting with biometric authentication before password autofill since at least September 2024. In August 2025, the feature made its way to Dev and Canary Chrome versions, only to be pulled before going stable.
If the feature eventually ships, it would add an extra layer of security by requiring a fingerprint or face unlock before Chrome fills in saved passwords on Android.
