Google has begun testing a way for shoppers in India to buy products from Flipkart directly inside Gemini and AI Mode, according to TechCrunch. In the test, select Flipkart product listings display a Buy button that opens a Flipkart checkout flow without leaving the AI interface.
The trial is limited to some users and a small selection of products, including smartphones, electronics, and mobile accessories. Google plans to roll out the experience more broadly later in October, ahead of India's festive shopping season.
Agentic shopping push
The test builds on the Universal Commerce Protocol, which Google introduced earlier this year as an open standard for AI agents to interact with retailers across the shopping journey. Flipkart was named earlier this month among merchants partnering with Google on agentic shopping experiences in India.
Listings from Amazon appeared alongside Flipkart products in the experience seen by TechCrunch, but those did not offer direct purchase through the AI interface. Google invested about $350 million in Flipkart in 2024 as part of a funding round led by Walmart, taking a minority stake.
A Google spokesperson said the company is always testing new features and experiences to help people discover and connect with businesses more easily.
