Google Replaces Gemini Gems With Stackable Skills
Google's new Skills feature lets users call custom prompts from any Gemini chat and chain several together into multi-step automations.
Google has replaced Gemini Gems with a new feature called Skills, according to Android Authority. Skills can be invoked from any Gemini chat and draw on the data in the conversation where they are used.
The feature supports stacking: several Skills can be combined and chained into step-by-step automations rather than run one at a time. A Skill is triggered inside the chat with the forward slash command.
Gemini users can create a Skill in two ways. The first is to type a request directly in the chat; the second is to open Settings, go to Skills, and choose Create Manually.
A dedicated Skills page in Settings lists recommended skills, skills the user has created, and old Gems.
Gems background
Google introduced Gems in mid-2024 as AI helpers that lived in their own chat windows with their own instructions. Gems now appear alongside user-created Skills on the new Settings page.
