Google Opens Public AI Content Verification Site Using SynthID

Google's free tool accepts JPG, PNG, MP4, MP3 and other common formats, and Google says it handles 1 million verification requests per day.

Google has opened public access to a website that uses its SynthID technology to check whether images, videos or audio were created with AI, according to TechCrunch. The tool was previously limited to select journalists, media professionals and researchers who tested it at Google I/O last year.

The site accepts image formats including JPG, PNG, BMP and GIF, video formats including MP4, MOV and WEBM, and audio formats including WAV, MP3 and FLAC. Google said the tool receives 1 million verification requests per day.

SynthID verification is also available inside the Gemini app and Google Chrome, so users can check content without leaving the products they already use.

Google introduced SynthID in 2023, and the company says its Nano Banana, Veo and Lyria models, along with tools such as Gemini, Flow, ProducerAI and Vids, use it to watermark generated media.

OpenAI, Nvidia and Kakao also support SynthID, and OpenAI maintains its own content-checking site. Apple is said to be adding support soon, while Microsoft and Meta have their own standards for watermarking and verifying content.
