Google Launches Unified Agentic Gemini Agent for Businesses
Google unveiled a unified Gemini agent that can plan and complete tasks across connected systems, starting with businesses before consumers.
Google announced at a Google Cloud event on October 8, 2026, that it is bringing Gemini into the agentic age with the launch of a unified agent that can answer questions and perform tasks on the user's behalf from a single interface, according to TechCrunch.
The agent can be given objectives rather than instructions, allowing it to plan work, use custom skills and tools, and connect to businesses' internal systems. It can connect to Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack, Jira, Confluence, Git, BigQuery, Databricks, Postgres, Snowflake and other systems, and can work with any Model Context Protocol server inside or outside a company's network.
By default, the AI picks the best model for a task, but users can choose a model, including third-party models starting with Anthropic's Claude. Google said it will expand the model picker to include open source and other private models in the future.
Users can track the agent's work in a tasks inbox interface showing its thinking process, task delegation to subagents, skill loading, code and progress. The agent has its own Workspace account with its own email address and context, and can be reached by tagging, emailing, sharing or adding it to a group chat. It writes an audit trail attributed to the agent rather than a person.
The agent is accessible from iOS and Android mobile devices, Windows and Mac desktops, the command line interface, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, ServiceNow and Slack. Early testers included On, Shopify and PayPal.
Business focus and spending controls
Google will initially focus on bringing the agent to businesses before later rolling it out to consumers. The company also announced new flexible spending options including multi-model orchestration, smart routing and real-time spend caps.
At the event, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in October 2026 that Gemini has over 1 billion monthly active users and that nearly 90% of Fortune 100 businesses now use Gemini Enterprise at work. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian also spoke at the event, according to TechCrunch.
