Kim Sang-chul, chairman of Hancom Group, received a special merit award from the Hangul Society at the 580th Hangul Day Celebration held on October 9, 2026, at the Hangul Society auditorium in Jongno-gu, Seoul, according to zdnet.co.kr. Hancom announced the award on October 11.

The award was created to mark the 580th anniversary of the promulgation of Hunminjeongeum and the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Hangul Day.

Kim donated the entire prize money plus an additional 10 million won to the Hangul Society for research and development of the Korean language.

The Hangul Society also awarded Korean Language Movement Merit Awards to four people for their contributions to education, research and dissemination of the Korean language.

Background

Hancom has partnered with the Sejong Institute Foundation to provide Hancom Office free of charge to Sejong Institutes worldwide and has sponsored Korean speaking contests and scholarships. In 2021, Kim donated his Sejong Culture Award prize money to develop a dedicated font for Sejong Institutes. Hancom later worked with the Sejong Institute Foundation and Yoon Design Group to develop and distribute the Sejong Institute Font.
