Microsoft Teams to add third-party deepfake detection, impersonation protection

Both features are listed on the Microsoft 365 Roadmap and set for general availability in November after a worldwide rollout.

Microsoft will add support for third-party deepfake detection solutions in Teams meetings, alongside a new impersonation protection feature, according to an announcement on the Microsoft 365 Roadmap. Both are set to reach general availability in November after a worldwide rollout.

The third-party deepfake detection integration is listed as in development. According to the company, organizations can enhance meeting security with synthetic audio and video detection solutions from certified third-party providers.

Those providers analyze meeting media and send detection signals to Teams, where they feed in-meeting experiences and controls. Microsoft says the goal is to give organizations additional tools for spotting synthetic audio and video during calls.

The impersonation protection feature surfaces warnings and risk indicators when a potential impersonation attempt is detected, according to Microsoft. No separate development status for that feature was given in the roadmap entry.

Earlier Teams security changes

The roadmap additions follow a series of Teams security updates. In August, Microsoft began rolling out a Teams meeting protection policy that lets admins block identified external bots from joining meetings. In September, the company said users would be able to report suspicious guest invitations directly from Teams starting in November. In December, Microsoft announced that admins would be able to lock external users via the Defender portal starting in January.
