Microsoft rebuilds Windows 11 Search, rolls out Insider preview

The WinUI 3-based Search adds local inline actions and improved query matching, and is available to Insiders in the Experimental channel.

Microsoft is rebuilding the Windows 11 Search experience and rolling out a preview to Windows Insiders, according to windowscentral.com. The redesigned Search is built on WinUI 3, which Microsoft says improves performance and reduces memory usage.

The new Search improves query matching for typos and synonyms. Users can trigger actions such as switching to dark mode, turning on Bluetooth, muting, or adjusting volume directly from the Search box.

Microsoft is working on richer file previews, more detailed search results, and inline web answers. It also plans to integrate Copilot so answers appear directly in the Search interface before opening the Copilot app.

The preview is available to Insiders in the Experimental channel for versions 26H2 and 26H1, requiring build 26340.9616 (26H2) or build 28120.3181 (26H1) or later. The feature can be enabled manually via Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program > Feature flags, followed by a restart.

The new Search does not require a Copilot+ PC or NPU; its inline actions use a small machine-learning model that runs locally on the main processor. Microsoft clarified the inline actions are not generative AI powered by an SLM or LLM.

Microsoft is also working on a capability to send text messages from Windows Search on PCs connected to a phone through Phone Link and Link to Windows. The traditional Windows Search experience was designed primarily to find apps, files, settings, and web results, with performance and query understanding that have always been questionable. Microsoft plans more features for later this year and a deeper integration with the Start menu in 2027.
