Microsoft: Draggable Taskbar won't return to Windows 11

Microsoft says moving the Taskbar by dragging was left out on purpose, citing research into accidental movements and infrequent use.

Microsoft has confirmed that dragging the Taskbar to reposition it will not be added to Windows 11, according to windowscentral.com. The capability was left out as a deliberate design decision rather than an omission.

Diego Baca, Vice President of Design at Microsoft, said the company's research found that dragging the Taskbar can cause accidental movements and that changing the Taskbar position is not done frequently.

Baca said Microsoft instead chose a discoverable setting reachable by right-click, which the company considers a more intentional and predictable experience. On Windows 11, moving the Taskbar requires right-clicking it, opening Windows Settings and selecting a location there.

Earlier this year, Windows 11 gained the ability to move the Taskbar, but without drag-to-reposition support.

In previous versions of Windows, including Windows 10, users could reposition the Taskbar by right-clicking it, unchecking "Lock the taskbar" and dragging it. Windows 10 also let users resize the Taskbar by dragging its top edge, a feature that did not carry over to Windows 11.
