Mistral Previews 1-Trillion-Parameter Open-Weight Model Le Chonk

Mistral Large 4, nicknamed Le Chonk, is available in preview with one trillion parameters; a final version is planned by the end of the month.

Mistral has released a preview of Mistral Large 4, an open-weight AI model with one trillion parameters that the company has nicknamed Le Chonk. A final version is planned by the end of the month, according to wired.com.

The model is freely available as an open-weight release. Mistral says it was trained from scratch and is optimized for coding, cyberdefense, manufacturing, finance, and electrical engineering.

The company claims Mistral Large 4 is the most capable open-weight model developed outside China, and that it comes very close to some proprietary models. It sits alongside offerings from OpenAI and Anthropic, whose models are not open-weight.

Mistral's cofounder and chief scientist, Guillaume Lample, is among the people behind the company's model work.

Funding and market context

In September 2025, Mistral raised a $3.3 billion funding round at a $24 billion valuation, the largest ever raise by a European tech company. Its earnings have reportedly increased 20-fold in the last year or so. In June 2025, the Trump administration placed temporary restrictions on the distribution of models from OpenAI and Anthropic, citing concerns they could be abused to launch sophisticated cyberattacks, and the White House has reportedly asked American labs to withhold unreleased models even from the UK's AI Safety Institute.
