Naver Map Adds Hiking Weather for 301 Mountains

Naver's hiking theme weather uses each mountain's coordinates for hourly forecasts of temperature, wind and rain along a chosen course.

Naver has launched a hiking theme weather service that covers 301 major mountains nationwide, the company said, with ultra-short-term forecasts based on each mountain's coordinates rather than on nearby administrative districts.

The service combines Naver Map hiking course data with hourly forecasts, letting users check temperature, wind and precipitation changes for each segment of a route according to their course and start time.

It also offers "seasonal scenery" information, including sunrise times and autumn foliage and blooming periods, which is viewable at all times on the weather screen. Naver said it plans to expand the seasonal scenery feature to other themes closely related to hiking.

The hiking forecast follows Naver's earlier theme weather expansion. In August last year the company began theme weather with baseball stadiums, later extending it to theme parks, ski resorts, football stadiums and golf courses.

Naver currently provides weather information for 868 theme areas in total, including 495 golf courses, 30 football stadiums and 20 baseball stadiums, according to digitaltoday.co.kr. Cumulative theme weather subscriptions reached about 213,000 at the end of September, up from about 73,000 in January, with Jamsil Baseball Stadium the most subscribed area at about 25,000.
