OpenAI briefly tops Anthropic in enterprise AI spending, data shows

OpenRouter and Ramp data put the two AI developers' September market shares close, with Ramp customers' spending favoring OpenAI for part of the month.

OpenAI briefly overtook Anthropic in enterprise AI spending in mid-September, according to Ramp economist Ara Kharazian, who cited an analysis of data from about 70,000 Ramp customers. Kharazian said the shift marked the first time OpenAI model spending had surpassed Anthropic since December of last year, though Anthropic later narrowly regained the lead.

Separately, OpenRouter analyzed spending data from more than 120,000 companies using Anthropic and OpenAI AI tools and found the two companies' market shares were similar in September, according to digitaltoday.co.kr.

Reevo co-founder and CEO David Joo said companies are switching AI models from Anthropic to OpenAI to cut costs and reduce dependence on a single model developer.

Anthropic's recent moves

Anthropic introduced the Claude 5.5 model family at the end of September, emphasizing price-to-performance. The company also announced that its Fable 5 model would retain user data for 30 days for trust and safety purposes.

At the start of the year, Anthropic accounted for 75% of total spending among the analyzed companies. In June, OpenAI introduced the GPT-5.6 model series (Sol, Terra, Luna) focused on cost-effectiveness.
